Photo Walk 16 – Richmond Olympic Oval

Had the pleasure to take some night time photos of the Richmond Olympic Oval last week.  It is a magnificent building located just on the river side, at the northwest corner of Richmond.

The Oval is where some of the Olympic Games will be held next year in Vancouver.

The official Olympics logs is on the side of the building.

The Richmond Olympic Oval houses a 400-metre track for speed skating.  The facility is 33,750 square metres.

According to their official web site, the Oval includes a state-of-the-art ice plant with superior air quality and climate controls.

It will seat 7,600 spectators.  The venue will host all speed skating events from Feb 13 to 27, 2010.

Can you guess what the light in the sky is?

The facility is very well lit inside and out, probably one of the brightest buildings in Richmond.

This is the back side of the Oval facing the water.

There is lots of green space between the building and the water.

If you jog or ride your bike along the dyke, you be passing the Oval.

At night, this is the scenery looking out from the Oval.

I am surprised to find this not near the front entrance, but the back of the building.

On the side of the building there are some big red net things as decorations.  I am not getting what it means though.

And finally, back inside the building.  The building itself is a fantastic facility.  It is currently open for public use already.  I saw gym users, ice skaters and basketball players inside the facility.  And on Oct 5th, the parking ticket machine will be in effect as well so no more free parking anymore.  I am glad I made it in time to use the parking for free once again.

More information of the Oval can be found on their official web site.

Update: 2010/02/25

Glad to report that one of my photos above was selected to be used by the engineering company that designed the acoustics of the Oval’s roof and ceiling: Marshall Long Acoustics
