Rocanini Coffee Roasters / Siphon Coffee

Back at Rocanini Coffee Roasters for a second time, and this time we shared a siphon coffee. Siphon is a vacuum coffee maker, the mechanics of it is quite simple, but the coffee resulted from this method is supposed to be rich, pure, smooth and crisp.

The siphon equipment looks like chemistry lab equipment to me.  But more polished, more elegant.

Rocanini uses a heat lamp to boil the water in the flask. It is a beautiful way of boiling water.

They have 3 of these heat lamps only. If you are going to try this siphon coffee, you would have to get in line on a busy day!

The ground coffee is put into a glass container with a filter. It is then inserted into the boiling water. When the water boils, the steam creates sufficient pressure to push the water up to the glass container. There it mixes with the ground coffee.  The flask is removed from the heat lamp, allowing it to cool down. The pressure is then reduced and the filtered coffee flows down to the flask from the glass container.

Here is a video of how it works.

Here is the coffee ready for tasting.

The coffee we picked is the Ethiopia Aleta Wondo blend. I tried it black at first but found it a bit sour. So I ended up adding the usual amount of sugar and coffee cream to it :)

It is a treat, at $8, a novelty that I enjoyed.  It is definitely very smooth, very clean and rich. Another item off my bucket list :P
