This is my second AirPort Extreme Base Station. The first one I owned, I bought through the Apple Online Refurbished store 3 years ago.  At the time, the unit was a Draft N unit and didn’t have simultaneous dual band.  (For the geekiest of you, it was model A1143, the first AirPort Extreme that came with Gigabit network ports.)  Today, I upgraded to the latest from Apple, released on June 21, 2011 to replace the old router I have been using.

It has been a long wait since the Lumix GF1 was released. I almost broke down to get the GF1 but decided to wait for the GF2 instead.  Patience always pays off :)

Getting a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for my computer equipment hasn’t been new.  I have had numerous UPS’es for my other computers and they have been maintenance free, confidence adding piece of hardware to combat electrical surge and blackouts. What is new is trying a different brand and form factor this time.

As promised by Apple, customers who got their iPhone 4′s before the end of September would be eligible for a case to help alleviate the reception problems from the poor antenna design of the iPhone 4.  Personally I have not had a lot particular reception issues where I need to use the iPhone 4. I can see the signal strength drops if I grip the iPhone the way we are “not supposed to” but I can easily change how I hold it as well.  It hasn’t deter me from enjoy using the iPhone 4. Well, now with the bumper case, I should enjoy the iPhone 4 even more.

Finally I have Ubuntu setup the way I like on the Acer easyStore h340 Windows Home Server hardware. I did not employ any Drive Pooling software as I experienced it on Windows Home Server and I didn’t quite like it. This time, I want my files to be stored in a more standardized, redundant, fault tolerant setup: RAID10.  Here is the steps I went through to get my 8 x 1TB drives setup to two separate software RAID10 arrays, creating an effectively ~4TB of redundant storage.

Disclaimer: I am new to Linux and do not know enough about what I am doing. If you follow these steps and resulted in data lost, I am sorry but I can’t be held responsible…. other than that, hope this helps you with what you need to accomplish.

Ever since I got the WD My Book Studio II, I keep all my photos in it as it is a RAID device.  A 2TB device provides 1TB of storage when it is in RAID 1 mode (mirrored) and I quickly approach running out of room with RAW files being part of what I keep.  Luckily I have a couple slightly bigger capacity compatible drives to let me upgrade  the external unit with.
