I have taken some night shots to compare the noise level of these three cameras that I own: Sony Alpha NEX-5N, Canon T1i and Panasonic Lumix GF2.  The Sony and Panasonic cameras are both mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, the Canon is a DSLR.  In terms of price point when introduced to market with a kit lens, the Canon is the most expensive of the three, the Panasonic is the cheapest.

All these cameras have different sensor sensitivity.  The most limiting of them is the Panasonic Lumix GF2 with a highest ISO 6400.  The Canon T1i has the highest ISO at 12800 and Sony Alpha NEX-5N has the highest ISO at 25600.  The above pictures are 100% crop at ISO 6400 for a fair comparison.  The Sony Alpha NEX-5N compares very favourably to the Canon T1i, if not better. The Alpha NEX-5N, having the APS-C size sensor (same size as the DSLR) seems to have given it a big image quality advantage over the Lumix GF2.

There are lots of old buildings in Hong Kong. I think the most interesting ones are the corner buildings with a round corner on every floor.  These buildings are pretty old, and most are not tall at all.  I would guess they are 50 to 60 years on average. I hope they will preserve these buildings are they are much more interesting than the new taller highrises built these days. Here are some photos of the corner houses I took while I was in Hong Kong.

During my trip to Hong Kong, I had a chance to visit Lamma Island. Lamma Island used to be a small fishing island, producing lots of pawn paste and other sun dried seafood. I used to despise the smell of the seafood hanging to dry up and be preserved by salt. Now, I don’t find it offensive anymore probably because my nose doesn’t work as well anymore :P

Wow, that was fast.  It has only been 3 months since I got my GF2, Panasonic today announced the successor to the GF2: Lumix GF3. Dpreview.com has a preview of the camera itself, head over there to take a look for yourself.

It is pretty amazing how small these cameras can get.  Personally, I have already found the GF2 a bit small to handle as I sometimes press the buttons on the back unintentionally while adjusting the scroll wheel.  Hopefully with the new combined dial/4 way controller, it will be a bit easier to handle as there are yet fewer buttons on the back now. With a touch screen, the user interface design definitely has changed a lot from the traditional hardware buttons point of view. I found the touch screen very responsive and intuitive to use.

Pricing wise, it will be the same as how the GF2 was priced: US$699 with a 14mm f2.5 kit lens, US$599 with a 14-42mm zoom lens.  General availability will start in July.  More info can be found on the Panasonic web site.

I am pretty happy with the GF2 and if I had money, I probably would get the GF3 just for kicks, too.  (now my wife will definitely give me a kick for wanting yet another toy :P)

Hong Kong used to be a colony of United Kingdom. Even today, you can find lots of British influence. Above is the Queen Victoria statue located at Victoria Park. The most memorable event in Victoria Park for me is the Chinese New Year Eve celebration. There are rows and rows of flower markets held at the park. Even at very cold temperature, there would still be a lot of people crowding up to get flowers for the new year. For kids, like me back then, they would be there trying to look for toys for the new year. Good times :P

More local hanami photos, this time we were at Gary Point Park in Steveston. We were lucky that they are in full bloom all at once.

The cherry blossoms at Burrard Station has started blooming for almost a week now. They usually only last for about 10 days and with the rain forecast on the weekend, I wonder if the petals will fall sooner. Until then, let’s enjoy the blossoms!
